5 Eco-Friendly Destinations You Need to Visit

Sustainable travel isn’t just a trend — it’s a commitment to the places and communities that make travel meaningful. When you choose an eco-friendly destination, you’re supporting conservation, local economies, and responsible tourism practices that protect what makes these places special. Here are five incredible destinations that prove traveling responsibly feels just as extraordinary.

We researched over a hundred destinations this year to build our sustainable travel picks. These five stood out not only for their beauty — but for the commitment behind them. Each is a place where conservation and community are as important as the visitor experience…

  • Costa Rica — Osa Peninsula & Cloud Forests
  • Slovenia — Lake Bled & the Julian Alps
  • Bhutan — Carbon-Negative Kingdom
  • Norway — Fjords & Electric Ferry Routes
  • New Zealand — Department of Conservation Trails
  • And Portugal’s Azores — a rising star in sustainable tourism 🙂

What Makes Travel Sustainable?

Sustainable travel covers a broad spectrum: choosing accommodations that source locally, supporting community-owned businesses, minimizing carbon impact through overland travel, respecting wildlife and protected areas, and engaging with cultures on their own terms rather than as a spectacle. It’s not a checkbox — it’s a mindset that runs through every decision you make as a traveler.

When the destination wins, the traveler wins. There’s no great travel without healthy ecosystems and thriving communities behind it.

The environmental impact of each destination on our list is something we take seriously. You can always ask us about carbon offset options, local conservation projects, and responsible operators. Transparency isn’t just good ethics — it’s good travel culture.

How to Choose a Sustainable Destination

Look for destinations that have invested in renewable energy, protect natural areas, and support local livelihoods. Certifications like Green Globe, EarthCheck, and B Corp are useful signals, but they’re no substitute for a destination that genuinely prioritizes the long-term health of its ecosystems and communities.

Sustainable travel is the foundation of everything we recommend. That’s something worth packing your bags for.

Slovenia is so underrated! We visited last summer and it blew us away. The whole country feels like it was designed with sustainability in mind. Adding Bhutan to the bucket list now.

Love this list! The Azores have been on my radar for a while — this convinced me to finally book it.
